MA, novelist, essayist, and poet whose latest novel, The Blue Geography, was a finalist in the Texas Review novel contest. Ms. Caram's other novels are Dear Corpus Christi; Wintershine; and Rena, A Late Journey. She edited Palm Readings, a multicultural anthology of fiction by Southern California women, and is the recipient of the UCLA Extension Outstanding Instructor Award in Creative Writing, 2006.
Working with committed students in the artistic discipline that has guided my life--fiction writing--excites me, becomes a generating force. I love to work with people who want to make something and make it in the way that only they can. I encourage individual ways of working and assign at least a story or novel chapter a week from a number of different kinds of writers, passing along the advice one of my teachers gave me: "You'll never be any better than the best writer you read." I also encourage involvement in other art forms. I give weekly exercises, both in and out of class, and recommend and sometimes teach from books that inspire and give practical advice (Goldberg) to books that deal primarily with technique (Gardner). Class members read work aloud, although no one is required to do so. I give students written guidelines on commentary, urging them to start always with what works well and on the strengths each writer brings, with the belief that we can help each other make credible worlds readers willingly enter and, in this way, share being alive and human, learning from our differences and taking comfort from the ways in which we are the same. I can't think of a more satisfying way to spend our time here. Many of my students have published. Many more will. I rejoice with them all.
"The class I took with Eve La Salle Caram in the Writers' Program is the reason I'm a published author today. I learned so much about the craft of writing and how to develop my own voice. The novel I began writing under Eve's supervision is what ultimately got me my agent. The class literally changed my life!"
--Jordanna Fraiberg, UCLA Extension Writers’ Program Alum
