Charles Burmeister

Instructor Biography:

MFA; screenwriter/director of the feature Columbus Day starring Val Kilmer and produced by Kevin Spacey and Fred Roos; winner of the Chesterfield Screenwriting Fellowship.  Mr. Burmeister also wrote the short film Interview which was selected for the Sundance Film Festival in 2007. He has developed television series with Lionsgate and is currently casting his next feature film.

Instructor Statement:

Art is the expression of the subconscious through a specific form. This is difficult. Not only must you find a clear voice in your subconscious, but this voice must work in unison with craft, which is in the realm of the conscious brain and has rules and judgment that often snuff the spark of creativity. I hope to help you understand the form you have chosen, screenwriting, and the building blocks, structures, and craft that make it unique. Eventually, you should come to know it so well that your subconscious naturally starts expressing itself in this form. Likewise, I hope to help you identify when your subconscious is truly committed to telling a story, that is when you truly love it, as opposed to when you’ve just come across a neat idea in which you have no real emotional investment. With both these building blocks in place, you will be ready to practice the mysterious alchemy that is screenwriting.
