Instructor Biography:

Editor for over twenty years for academic presses and peer-reviewed journals, including Oxford University Press, University of California Press, and Routledge. Ms. Belcher is author of the book Writing Your Journal Article in Twelve Weeks: A Guide to Academic Publishing Success. She also is an award-winning scholarly writer who has published numerous articles and a book on West Africa, and teaches African literature at Princeton University.

 

Instructor Statement:

I have been working as a writer, editor, and researcher for over twenty years. I like to think that the variety of my everyday work helps me in the classroom. As a writer, I spend many days struggling with words and meaning. I did the same when I was a graduate student and continue to do so now that I am a professor. This makes me sympathetic to anyone attempting the arduous labor of writing. As an editor, I spent most of my days reading others’ writing. My formal training was in improving texts without changing the author’s intent or style. My informal training was through reading peer reviewers’ evaluations of scholars’ work, which taught me much about what scholars think publishable work is. As a researcher, I spend hours trying to understand and distill complex material. This helps me to communicate complicated ideas in straightforward ways. By bringing these three skills together in the classroom, I hope I encourage students to be better writers with a clearer sense of their own purpose and voice. It sometimes happens that writing teachers try to get their students to write what they as teachers would write. Although I am often tempted to do the same, my training as a copyeditor helps me to see others’ writing for what it is: theirs. I bring to teaching my editorial philosophy, which is that the mark of a good editor is someone who can change a text only slightly and yet improve it greatly.
