Instructor Statement:

Language and literature have been primary passions in my life. In my class, I stress the essentiality of words to our everyday lives. I love reading stories with the specific and unique language that each student uses as his or her tools of creation. Whether the style is humorous or a brooding meditation, we explore the mystery of life through the creative process. I am there as a catalyst or guide, depending on the needs of each student, to ignite the creative voice through this often lonely and difficult maze of exploration. My classes act as the support system for the often frustrating, but ultimately fulfilling journey of creation. Yes, I take the art of writing seriously, which doesn't mean my courses are not invigorating or fun. I encourage a free flow of positive classroom discussion and debate. There is a great thrill in reading or writing alone, thinking about what you've read or written, and then exchanging ideas with others. "Storytelling" began as an oral tradition. In keeping with that tradition, I encourage my students to read aloud so they can hear the ebb and flow of their words. I think of it this way: If reading aloud could bring joy to the poster boy for depression, Franz Kafka, imagine what it can do for the spirits of the rest of us.
